1) Tablecloths are pretty much exclusively found in up-scale/pretentious restaurants in the US.
2) Straight lines are easier to draw than fabric

Last time I was in a restaurant that had tableclothes… I also //had// to wear a tie.
So, it’s been a long, long, long time since, as I hate that hoity-toity shit. You can get perfectly fine restaurant cuisine without that sort of nonsense.
